The DMT Conspiracy: Hallucination or Reality?

Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a naturally-occurring psychedelic compound made up of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen. It exists in several plant species and trace amounts are found in the human body. While contemporary scientists remain uncertain as to DMT’s role in the human body, plants containing the compound have been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. Users claim to experience a lucid extra-dimensional plane of reality. Research scientists have affirmed that these DMT users may be at least partially correct.

Science & Spirituality

DMT users experience remarkably similar hallucinations, unlike those who use LSD, peyote, or other psychedelic drugs. Dr. Rick Strassman, a psychiatry professor at the University of New Mexico, has been on the vanguard of DMT research in an attempt to understand its biological effects. He believes that the brain’s pineal gland may be the source of human DMT production. He further asserts that the pineal gland may also be a literal interpretation for the Third Eye which is depicted in ancient religious art as bearing significance. After exposing 60 volunteers to DMT, Professor Strassman noted that many claimed to have engaged in an interaction with some outside intelligence; an insectoid or reptilian alien presence in advanced technological environments that communicated with them throughout their hallucinatory experience. Often, during the hallucination, they were "probed," "tested," "taught," "loved," and even "raped." These hallucinations closely mirrored those of reported near-death experiences as well as accounts of alien abduction. Dr. Strassman hypothesized that a panic-induced release of DMT from the pineal gland may be responsible for these real-life experiences. He continues to research the correlation between DMT-induced experiences and historical accounts of prophecy. Could pineal gland disorders or over-production of DMT be a plausible explanation for out-of-body, near-death, and alien abduction experiences?

Graham Hancock, author of Supernatural, asserts that these alien intelligences are real and able to assist human beings. He notes that depictions of these interactions date back tens of thousands of years and are even present in cave drawings found in France. Hancock also cites the success of various DMT clinics which operate outside of the United States. These clinics treat drug addicts via the ancient Amazonian Ayahuasca ritual which incorporates exposure to DMT. After five sessions, over 50% of patients wholly break their addictions to hard drugs such as heroine and crack cocaine.

The Conspiracy

In the United States, DMT is listed as a Schedule 1 illegal narcotic under Section C. Its authorized use is restricted to a handful of religious organizations, such as Uniao do Vegetal. Unlike most illegal narcotics, sans marijuana, DMT is non-addictive. Theorists assert that DMT has been banned by the U.S. Government in order to cease the psychological and spiritual ascension of the masses; believing that these experiences are not mere hallucinations, but actual interactions with other forms of intelligence. They claim that the puppet-masters wish to keep these revelatory experiences away from the mainstream. The conspiracy theory hinges heavily on the United State’s policy of fluoridating its population’s water supply. The process of fluoridation was once used by Adolf Hitler in Nazi Germany as he believed it would create a more docile population and quell dissent. Scientists have substantiated the fact that fluoride can effectively disrupt the operation of the pineal gland and is, in high doses, equivalent to a chemical lobotomy. For these reasons, every industrialized nation, except the U.S., has long-since decided to forgo the fluoridation of water supplies.

Nice article

I was reading about the ayahuasca and the ceremonies they have in Peru. People seem to experience other realities just like when using DMT.

I wonder what it would happen if it was available to the masses without being restricted

It certainly makes you wonder. Of course, the Western world is far removed from spirituality in this sense. I think the Easterners figured most of it out thousands o years ago and we are nowhere near their previous level of understanding.

this is really interesting. the fact that the hallucinations are all very similar makes me think they might be onto something. blows my mind

I originally became interested in this because of my fascination with alien abduction accounts. I always thought it was possible that there was a chemical/biological explanation. Obviously, there is not enough evidence regarding DMT yet. However, I think that over-production of DMT in the human brain has at least moderate potential to explain SOME alien abduction, OBE, and near-death experiences.

Hey Jones,

I've also been fascinated with alien abductions as a kid and in recent times I have read that it is possible these aliens are not really from these dimensions but from other realities that some humans have had access to. I have had sleep paralysis since I can remember so it led me to research OBE's, astral projections, other realities, quantum physics, and I have had experiences myself and since reading about ayahuasca and DMT I wonder what experiences I could have.

Awesome topic

Ruben, I try to keep up with physics, especially concerning String/M-Theory and the Holographic Universe Theory. If I didn't suck at math I would have majored in physics. I honestly hope that we gain a better understanding within my lifetime regarding the multi-verse theories, the 11 dimensional reality (string theory), and quantum mechanics. I think a lot of the answers to these questions will be answered by physicists. I have never had any such experiences myself. But, I can imagine that suffering from sleep paralysis would certainly be a reason to seek these answers. Maybe certain people are more succeptible to these experiences and perhaps, just maybe, study of the pineal gland or DMT can provide answers.

I intend to do more research into oras, psychic ability, etc. There must be something tangible to study regarding electro-magnetic energy being eminated from the human body. Especially since the human brain is basically a hodge-podge of electrical activity. Electromagnetism is the strongest of the four physical forces, the others being strong nuclear, weak nuclear, and gravity. What if electromagnetism is strong enough to disseminate through more dimensions than the 4 that we are familiar with? Maybe unlocking this energy in the human brain could offer some insight into other dimensions, realities, etc.

Wow this is exciting. I read a book when I was a teenager called spiral dance from star hawk. She claimed to have a direct line to being in the 7 sisters contellation. She spoke quite a bit about the third eye. What plants have this property and do they have any other benefits to the human body and or mind?

Judi, Star Hawk has written a handful of books that remain on my wish list. I hope to get around to them soon. Living in New Mexico, I have worked with some Zuni and Jicarilla Apache Natives. Their stories regarding spirituality and sky people are amazing.

I was going to provide a list of plants which contain DMT, but there are just too many. Unfortunately, I am not a botonists nor can I read Latin, so most of the names make no sense to me. Some of the families include Acanthaceae, Aceraceae, Aizoaceae, Apocynaceae, and Fabaceae. There are literally hundreds of plant species which contain DMT, but I have no idea in what concentrations. It appears that many grow in South America, Peru, and the Amazon.

Since DMT has been illegal for some time, it is difficult to get an accurate measure of its potential benefits. It is believed that DMT may play a role in visual dreams, but its role in the human body is laregly unknown. Aside from religious or spiritual awakenings, there isn't much research available on the subject.

Jonsey I really loved her book. You can see crazy you tube videos of her at metaphysical festivals. She's treated like a queen. This topic really has me thinking. I wonder if it's not another reality but another dimension. Have you ever seen Stephen Hawkings video on the explanation between the different dimension? Also the pineal gland and other glands are parts of the chakra system. I am not super familiar with this belief but people who are can somehow move energy about them. I think it is called reiki. I wonder if these people who study this can tap into their DMT only because they are forcing their brain to do it. Does that make any sense? Cool hub. Voted up and all that other stuff.

Wow, this is a fascinating hub. Voted up for sure. I will definitely have to do some reading on this. You have to slow down, every hub you write adds about 10 books to my reading list. I don't have the time, but I will try.

Great hub, you always come up such interesting topics.

cooldad, I know what you mean. Everytime I watch a documentary or read a book, another five books get added to my reading list. Maybe I will catch up sometime during my retirement. I figure that by the time I learn everything I want to know, I'll start becoming senile and have to start all over. One day I'll be a cranky old vet spitting this stuff at the local VFW over a $30 beer, telling everyone what it was like when Social Security existed.
